    Barrett was born on April 5, 1963, and grew up in the WesternNew York town of Youngstown.

    He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17, on March 16, 1981, and underwent recruit training at Delta Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion Parris Island.
